Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal) finally escaped abusive husband Nish Panesar (Navin Chowdhry) just before Christmas in EastEnders, when she left him to be with girlfriend Eve Unwin (Heather Peace).

However, this didn’t go down well with Nish, who, in his determination to take her back, turned aggressive once again, only to be hit over the head with a bottle by Denise Fox (Diane Parish).

After waking up in hospital weeks later, Nish granted Suki a divorce, on the condition that she move out of their family home immediately.

While Suki thought this meant she would finally be free, in upcoming scenes it will become clear that he is still in control.

Having already been encouraged to move on from Suki by Priya Nandra-Hart (Sophie Khan Levy), who assures Nish that she won’t ever be coming back to him, Nish invites Suki over to discuss their divorce.

He suggests that they have a mediator present, throwing out Vinny Panesar’s (Shiv Jalota) name as an example, and soon Suki agrees.

Later, Suki bumps into old friend Barminder, and soon her marriage is the topic of conversation, and namely, why it ended.

Despite having slowly grown more confident and comfortable in her sexuality, Suki still struggles to open up, and reveals to Barminder that she is frightened of judgement.

After Barminder offers advice, Suki resolves to stay strong, but that proves challenging when she meets Nish for their talk about the divorce.

Instead of Vinny, Nish has invited the Giani from their temple to act as mediator – a deliberate move that he knows will leave her feeling humiliated.

The session is excruciating for poor Suki, though the Giani is kind, and it is instantly clear that the gloves are off between Suki and Nish.
