EastEnders has aired a sad exit for one character this evening – ahead of another departure.

Tonight, fans of the BBC soap watched on as Ashton bid farewell to his foster parents Whitney Dean and Zack Hudson. Whilst they knew their time with Ashton would be short, the pair seemed heartbroken to let him go and hugged him tight as they bid farewell.

The pair have been left reeling by their own set of news, after finding out that Whitney is pregnant again. She devastatingly suffered a miscarriage last year, after they lost their baby, who they lovingly called Peach.

Soap boss Chris Clenshaw had previously teased that there will be a Christmas miracle for Whitney and Zack ahead of Shona McGarty’s big exit from the BBC soap. We are yet to leave, but it will no doubt be a big storyline for such an iconic character.

“What I will say is that her and Zack have a little Christmas/New Year miracle,” Chris said previously as he opened up on what fans of the soap can expect for Whitney and Zack in the coming weeks.

Speaking about her departure, Shona added: “I have decided to spread my wings and will be leaving. I have loved my years in the show. I have been trusted with some incredible storylines and have made amazing friendships — and family — which will endure.”

However, she has been forced to pull out of her first job since quitting the soap, where she is playing Belle in a production of Beauty and the Beast. Giving fans an update, she wrote: “Guys… I’ve been feeling rough recently, as you know, and unfortunately have come down with the worst cold n flu symptoms and a really sore throat!

“I did today’s show, and got through it, but it was tough. It’s such horrid timing to be ill. Typical! During a panto run! Gutted! I’m so so sorry to anyone who’s coming to panto to see me specifically tonight, but I’ve had to bow out of tonight’s performance and possibly tomorrow’s too. I’ve got antibiotics and lots of meds! I am going to dose myself up, and get better! I am determined to get back up there, and sing my heart out again soon! The wonderful Laura, will be playing Belle tonight. She’s absolutely fabulous.”
