BBC EastEnders viewers share same demand as fan favourite returns amid health scare

EastEnders fans have been quick to praise Linda Carter for being so supportive of her friend Alfie Moon after he returned from his trip to Spain with prostate cancer

EastEnders fans are all saying the same thing as Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) made a dramatic return to Walford with some shocking news.

The beloved character has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and had surgery in Spain to remove the tumour. Sadly, he was told that not all of his cancer was removed during the operation and he will need further treatment.

This left him scared and struggling to cope, despite support from pal Linda Carter (Kellie Bright). Back at the Square, Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) gave Alfie a piece of her mind for leaving their sons, but she softened when he revealed his cancer diagnosis and the need for more treatment.

Fans are hoping that Alfie and Linda will stay as friends, with one fan writing: “I beg we keep Alfie and Linda like this the best supportive friends duo # EastEnders,” and another adding: “Alfie and Linda have such a lovely friendship hope they just keep them that way and nothing more #EastEnders.”

A third fan agreed: “Linda supporting Alfie is the sweetest I adore their friendship #EastEnders,” while a fourth said: “I love Alfie and Linda’s friendship #EastEnders.”

Shane Richie, who plays Alfie, previously spoke about his on-screen relationship with on-screen love interest Jessie Wallace, who plays Kat, saying: “Me and Jessie have known each other for 21 years and every time we do a scene together we keep getting notes from upstairs saying ‘Don’t look at each other’. In case we give any clues away.

“They don’t want to see the relationship we used to have. So Jessie might brush past me and I’m going ‘Stop Kat, you can’t touch me, don’t look at me like that!’ But who knows. Next year, something might happen, but we don’t know just yet.” Shane also revealed that he had his own prostate cancer check after filming the storyline.

The star revealed: “Here’s the thing. This is absolutely true, I don’t think I’ve told many people this other than my wife – two days before that meeting I went for a health check for prostate cancer. Only because it was on my radar.

“I’m getting to that age now and I’m starting to get reminded by a couple of friends and a close friend of mine who I’ve known since I was 16 went through prostate cancer, thankfully he’s out the other side, and I remember thinking ‘he’s not much older than me,'” he said.

“I’ve got a young family, I thought right, I’ve got a couple of days off from EastEnders, I’m gonna go along for a check-up. Thankfully I was alright, but two days later I had the meeting about doing this story. The fact they gave that particular storyline to a character like Alfie Moon… people are familiar with Alfie after 21 years, maybe another character might not have had the same impact.”
