EastEnders Christmas murder victim ‘not Dean’ as fans ‘work out’ red herring twist

Dean Wicks has returned to EastEnders and while some fans think he's the mystery man murdered at Christmas, others believe Matt Di Angelo's comeback is a "red herring"

EastEnders villain Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo) is back in Walford after seven years.

To Linda Carter’s (Kellie Bright) horror, Dean plans to make Albert Square his home again as he’s revealed as the Beales’ new business partner. His decision to return is driven by his need to be close to the local hospital where his daughter Jade (Roya Masood) – who has cystic fibrosis – is receiving treatment and awaiting a life-saving lung transplant.

Matt has reprised his role as twisted Dean, who raped Linda in 2014 and was driven out of Walford after being disowned by his family in 2016. Now Linda must contend with Dean being back on the Square and protesting his innocence to anybody who will listen.

Given his reputation amongst Linda’s family, friends and neighbours, Dean’s return is set to create drama for all those involved. Back in February, EastEnders aired a flash-forward sequence to Christmas 2023 and a male character was seen laying lifeless on the floor of the Queen Vic.

Linda had called last orders at the Vic, as Denise Fox (Diane Parish), Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth), Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) and Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal) all enjoyed a drink with their loved ones. Jump forward 10 months and Linda walks into the Vic on Christmas Day 2023 to discover a body on the floor and while some viewers are convinced the dead body is Dean, others think that it would be “too obvious”.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan penned: “I said from the day we saw the first Christmas flashback that Dean dies at Christmas, but now I’m thinking, is it too obvious. I need the next seven weeks to hurry up.” Another added: “I don’t think Dean is the body at Xmas. It would be too obvious. Think his a red herring.”A third person wrote: “it wont be Dean that dies on Christmas day too obvious… Hmm so wonder who it will be #EastEnders.”

Addressing whether or not he’ll be part of the dark festive plot, Matt Di Angleo said: “We know that Linda is involved in the Christmas storyline, and we also know that most people in the Square would like to see the back of Dean. But everyone is going to have to wait to find out if Dean’s the body on The Vic floor because I’m not giving away any clues.”

Fans will have wait and see who won’t make it to 2024 and who is responsible for the shock death. Will it be one of the six women involved or someone else?
