EastEnders fans ‘gasping’ over massive return twist

EastEnders spoilers follow for Wednesday’s (January 31) episode which you can now stream on BBC iPlayer.

Fans got the shock of their life over their breakfast this morning when they popped the latest offering of the long-running BBC One soap on iPlayer only to see a very familiar face.

And no, I’m not talking about Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters).

The recently deceased mechanic did appear during the episode in question, with Denise Fox (Diane Parish) suffering from hallucinations as her grip on reality slips further away.

The hairdresser, as viewers know, is seriously struggling to get her head around the events of Christmas, which saw her and five other iconic Walford matriarchs cover up Keanu’s murder.

Following a particularly detailed hallucination, in which Keanu buried her under the cafe, Denise was left at her wit’s end and with husband Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) somewhat preoccupied as he continues his affair with Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), she found herself seeking solace elsewhere.

Pastor Clayton offered some advice, suggesting that she unburden herself to someone who has been in her position before and therefore she paid a visit to see ex-husband and serial killer Lucas Johnston (Don Gilet) behind bars.

When I tell you I screamed. And it turns out I wasn’t the only one bowled over by the massive plot twist, with fans left in absolute shock this morning.

‘That ending… the GASP I just let out,’ wrote social media user katelynnmensah_, while @liamhamerrr wrote: ‘i did not expect to see that face….’.

Hard relate.

Another fan, meanwhile, took to X, formerly Twitter, to write: ‘#EastEnders ending the first month of the year on a high.

Couldn’t agree more.

The beloved serial drama has enjoyed quite several highs over the past couple of months, from surprise returns left, right and centre to the critically acclaimed The Six storyline, which reached its dramatic peak on Christmas Day.

It’s an exciting time to be an EastEnders fan, that’s for sure and, if January has taught us anything, it’s that show bosses are from out of ideas, with drama aplenty lined up for 2024.

EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One or stream from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
