With just weeks to go until the highly-anticipated Christmas murder mystery is solved, EastEnders has narrowed down the list of potential victims.

Fans of the BBC One soap have been desperately trying to work out which male resident will die at Christmas, after a shock death was teased in a historic flashforward sequence in February.

A special edition of the serial drama in honour of the show’s 38th anniversary saw six iconic Walford matriarchs bond during a lock-in at The Queen Vic.

Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), Denise Fox (Diane Parish), Sharon Watts(Letitia Dean), Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth), Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) and Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal) discussed what was on their mind and, as the night came to a close, the ladies in question raised their glasses.

Their final beverage saw them toast to all the men who have hurt them over the years, hoping that they would one day get what they deserve.

A chilling flash-forward took us to Christmas Day as the very same ladies gasped in shock as they towered over the a corpse of a dead man on the floor of the pub, with Sharon, in a wedding dress, checking the pulse of the unfortunate resident, declaring him dead.

Speculation has been rife ever since, with viewers eager to work out which male character will perish over the festive season and, given all the dodgy antics and ruthless acts that the male residents of Walford have carried out this year, there have been plenty of possibilities.

With just weeks to go, however, EastEnders has given fans a helping hand, narrowing down the possibilities, with a brand new series of promo pictures for the festive outing of the serial confirming that the victim will be one of seven residents.

Jack Branning (Scott Maslen), Nish Panesar (Navin Chowdhry), Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo), Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters), Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) and Rocky Cotton (Brian Conley).

One of them will perish at Christmas. But who?

That is the question.

One of the pictures show the men in question standing opposite the respective matriarch who their story is tied to, with Sharon having two male characters in her midst in Phil and Keanu.

The other image shows the villainous men posing in The Vic, in the very spot where the corpse will be found. Thecharacters also received their own promotional picture, surrounded by smoke, just like The Six did back in February.

What’s interesting, however, is that Theo Hawthorne (William Ellis), who has terrorised Stacey for much of the year, is absent from the picture, thus seemingly ruling him out as the victim.

Instead, Jack is pictured near Stacey. An omen of things to come? We’ll just have to wait and see, but it’s safe to say that this Christmas is not one to be missed.

EastEnders airs the outcome of the murder story on Christmas Day at 9:45pm on BBC One.
