Ex- EastEnders star Joe Swash revealed all on his return of sorts to the BBC soap, ahead of a major Christmas twist.

While a return for his character Mickey Miller isn’t currently on the horizon, Joe is back in Walford for a special episode 12 years after his last appearance on the show. Joe played loveable Mickey for five years between 2003 and 2008, before making a brief comeback in 2011.

Viewers have long called for the character to return to Albert Square, and now Joe is making a comeback – but not as his character. Instead, Joe will host a special episode with other cast members appearing, to discuss the looming Christmas death.

Speaking exclusively to The Mirror at tombola’s I’m A Celebrity critter challenge event recently, actor Joe teased whether a full-time return to the show could happen, as he revealed the “nostalgia” he felt being back on set. Joe addressed the big special episode that fans can look forward to later this month, as he shared his gratitude to the soap for kickstarting his career.

On the return of sorts he told us: “It’s really nice. You know, it’s nice to still have a relationship with EastEnders after all these years, which I really like. And whenever I’ve been back there it’s not changed, inside the dressing room, the makeup room costume room.

“It’s exactly the same, the same carpet, same doors. So I do get really nostalgic when I go back there. I was 21 when I did that show. So much has happened since then.

“You tend to forget about it. But it’s so, so nice. Maybe if I get a chance to go back, I’ll always go back. It’s a part of me, it’s something that’s a part of my past.”

On whether fans can expect Mickey to return to Walford in the future, he added: “I really don’t have much to do with it. I can’t make the decisions. They bring people back from the dead, so if they really wanted me, they know where I am.

“I loved my time on there. If it ever came back around again, I don’t know. It was an amazing place to learn my trade. I had five incredible years there.

“I wouldn’t be sitting here today if it weren’t for EastEnders. So yeah, I owe them a lot. If they ever asked I would definitely think about that.”
