EastEnders’ Sam Mitchell, played by Kim Medcalf, exited the soap during Thursday’s episode (January 18) - but fans are convinced she’ll be back after bosses scrapped an iconic feature
EastEnders fans were left fuming at their screens as Sam Mitchell exited the soap – but have already worked out when she’ll be back.
The character, played by Kim Medcalf has been a firm-favourite on the ITV soap. She first appeared in 1990, played by Daniella Westbrook – and over the years, has been involved in several big storylines.
In 2005, Sam was recast, and Kim took on the role – with the character making her epic return in 2022. However, that stint has now ended.
During Thursday’s episode (January 18) Sam was forced to leave the square by brother Phil. Sam decided to publicly expose him for his fling with Lola’s mum, Emma Harding last year. At first, she told him she would keep her mouth shut if he handed over her inheritance from the late Aunt Sal.
But despite getting her cash, in dramatic scenes, she took to the mic at the Queen Vic, during Phil and wife Kat’s birthday party to reveal to everyone about his infidelity. Kat and Phil’s marriage fell apart by the huge bombshell – and Kat packed up her things and moved in with Stacey.
Heartbroken and fuming, Phil demanded Sam to leave for good or else. Realising her time up, Sam headed over to the Walford tube station. With tears in her eyes, she then caught the tube to get away from the square.

Fans watching Sam’s exit have been left fuming over her leaving. However, some are convinced she’ll be back after noticing bosses scrapped an iconic feature.
During her final scene, show bosses never used the iconic theme tune to see her out, and viewers soon clocked it. “See I think they didn’t give her the music cos she’ll be back again in the future. Give it a couple of years. Who Shot Phil 2.0… Sam,” mused one person.
Someone else added: “Umm excuse you where is the julia’s theme for ar sam???” A third quipped: “They brought back Sam Mitchell for like over a month, only to then exit her again properly but without a Julia’s Theme? The Queen and icon that is Kim Medcalf? THIS IS A CRIME!”
Over on a Facebook fan page, one viewer mused: I think she will definitely be back sometime down the line. She always comes back.” A second said: “Maybe the 40th anniversary next year?”
