EastEnders airs another shock exit as three stars leave BBC soap in just a month

EastEnders viewers have said goodbye to another Walford legend in Friday’s episode (January 19) who has become the third character to leave the BBC soap this month

EastEnders is set to air another shock exit as Martin Fowler is leaving the square.

The character, played by James Bye, has been a staple on the soap since 1985. But in Friday’s episode (January 19) it was revealed that he was leaving the square for a brief break.

Speaking to Honey Mitchell, he told her that his sister Michelle was undergoing a hysterectomy. Fans will know that Michelle has been out living in Australia since 2018.

As a result, Martin revealed he was leaving to go to Aus and visit her “for a few weeks at least.” He also revealed he would be seeing Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) out in Aus – who as viewers will know, fled the square following the Christmas Day murder.

With Martin’s exit imminent, he has become the third person to say goodbye to Walford in the past month. At the start of January, and following the fall-out of the Christmas Murder, Sharon left Walford for Aus.

And during Thursday’s episode (January 18) Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf) also left the soap. She was forced to flee after exposing Phil Mitchell’s one-night stand with Lola’s mum, Emma Harding.

Speaking about her exit, Kim said: “Hopefully, she’ll [Sam] be back again sometime for another stint of causing chaos.” Asked what her time on EastEnders has been like, Kim went on: “It’s been brilliant, as always!

“It was perfect timing for me and worked really well that Sam was coming back for another short stint. That’s the beauty of this character – I love that she comes in, disrupts things, and then leaves the debris behind her.

“This time, she’s been chucked out the back of a van, taken £100k from Phil to pay back a drug dealer and then blown up his marriage to Kat! There’s a lot of drama with Sam, and it’s never plain sailing.”

Despite their fighting, Kim reckons Sam and her brother can patch things up. Asked if their relationship is forever broken, she replied: “Funnily enough, I don’t! I think it’s feasible that there could come a point in the future where Phil admits that Sam might have been wrong in how she did it, but the situation was all caused by his error. Sam didn’t make up the fact he slept with Emma – she just exposed him and his deceit.”
