EastEnders double exit ‘exposed’ as fans fume ‘that’s not fair’ after Ben star ‘axe’
EastEnders’ Max Bowden is said to be leaving the BBC soap this year after four years - and fans reckon his character Ben Mitchell will not be the only one saying goodbye
EastEnders viewers are convinced that two fan-favourite characters are going to exit the soap, following the news of Max Bowden’s ‘axe’.
It was recently reported that Max, who plays Ben Mitchell, will be bowing out of the programme. A source close to Max told Daily Star in December that the actor will leave the show indefinitely with his final scenes set to air in the coming weeks.
It was then claimed that Max’s private life hitting the headlines was a concern for execs of the show. An insider told The Sun: “There has been a lot of noise around him for a bit too long and that can take away from the drama on the show.”
Max made his EastEnders debut in 2019 and during his stint, he’s had some big storylines – including the character’s horrific rape ordeal in 2022. He was also a part of Lola Pearce’s heartbreaking brain tumour storyline.
Max was the sixth actor to play Ben – and became a hit with viewers since his first appearance. So much so, that he’s even scooped a few gongs for his portrayal.
His relationship with Callum “Halfway” Highway (Tony Clay) has also been applauded by viewers and critics. Their relationship is one of the strongest on the soap and have reminded each others’ biggest supporters – despite all the drama in the past year.
Now, fans reckon he isn’t the only character that will be leaving. In a heartbreaking twist, they claim his beau Callum will also be leaving. And it’s fair to say plenty are not happy – with one fuming that “it’s not fair.”
On X, formerly known as Twitter, one person pointed out: “Just a reminder that the last time Ben was leaving (early 2020) Callum begged him to stay and they weren’t married. So does EE really think/expect us to believe that Callum would let Ben leave without him now they are married and sold. I don’t think so they wouldn’t leave each other.”
Someone else added: “Still think they’ll recast or Callum will get a job transfer and they’ll move away. Then when they return the new Ben will be unveiled.”

A third fan quipped: “I don’t want him to lose his job either, as I love him as much as I do Max. I just have a hard time seeing how one could leave w/o the other, while keeping Callum in character. Realistically, Cal would be devastated, & neither would cheat on the other.”
While on a Facebook EastEnders fan page, one viewer penned about Calum’s potential exit: “That’s messed up, hope Lexi gets to stay on the show.” Someone else mused: “That’s not fair why has Callum got to go?”
