Last week, Jay was seen in hospital in a bad way, before coming round and being approached by a police officer to give his consent to them looking at his test results.

Jay refused, knowing it would show drugs in his system, and confided in Kim Fox and Ben Mitchell about his fears for his future.

In tonight’s episode, Jay was seen returning to the Square on crutches, heading to the car lot cabin where he bumped into Rocky Cotton.

Rocky – who was debating stealing a car to try and clear his debt to Nish Panesar – ended up sitting down for a chat with Jay and asked: “What are you doing here anyway? Have you come straight from the hospital? What about Lexi?”

Jay replied: “She’s having a movie night with Ben and Callum. I’ve got to keep on the straight and narrow now, £2,500 fine and a three year driving ban.

“A car salesman with no license ain’t much good to anyone. So I got my job back at Cokers and I’ll even tuck into the paperwork if it stops me drowning my sorrows.”

However, some EastEnders viewers were shocked at how suddenly Jay had been charged and convicted, considering such cases usually have to be decided at a Magistrates court.

Taking to X – formerly Twitter – one fan wrote: “A driving ban and a fine? How? When? #Eastenders just moving the plot along at warp speed eh? SMDH!”

Another added: “Driving ban, he has just got outta hospital.”

A third tweeted: “Jay’s left hospital only a few days after being in a coma..”

EastEnders airs on BBC One and is available on BBC iPlayer.
