EastEnders spoilers: Sam makes two staggering discoveries that change everything for the Mitchells
Just like weddings, funerals in EastEnders rarely go to plan and as the Mitchells gather for Aunt Sal’s send off, Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf) makes two seriously shocking discoveries.
The much-loved character of Aunt Sal was the formidable, sharp-tongued sister of Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor) and was last seen in 2017, shortly after Roxy and Ronnie Mitchell’s tragic deaths in the swimming pool.
Tragically, actress Anna Karen, who played Aunt Sal in more than 50 episodes, from her first appearance to her last, died last year in a house fire.
Now as the Mitchells say goodbye to Aunt Sal, her husband Harold Martin (David Stern) makes his first on-screen appearance and moves the congregation to tears wiith his beautiful eulogy.
But that’s not all Harold has to say.
He makes a throwaway comment that Aunt Sal has left Sam and her brothers Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) and Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) £100,000.
This is news to a stunned Sam, who immediately storms over to Phil – demanding to know when he is going to give her the money, or even planned to tell her about it.
Things have been tense between the siblings for quite a while, after Sam actively assisted gangster Jonah Tyler (Mark Mooney) in his attempt to bring down the Mitchell empire, and had a fling with Phil’s former arch-rival Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters).
And with Sam working for free at Peggy’s to pay off her debts to Phil, he’s not playing ball.
‘Sam thinks: “You are not my owner – give me the money and then we’ll decide, but it’s not for you to just leave me out of that equation,” says Kim, who plays her.
‘The relationship between Sam and Phil is that he’s always been the bully. She has had a whole lifetime of being told what to do by her big brother.’
But then a jealous Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) tells Sam that Phil slept with Lola Pearce’s mum Emma Harding (Patsy Kensit).
It’s just the ammunition Sam needs to blackmail Phil for her money.
Phil’s not having any of it, and tells Sam he won’t pay up. He’s convinced she’ll never go through with her threats.
Cue Phil and wife Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace)’s joint birthday party in the Queen Vic.
Finally, at the party, Phil agrees to cave in to Sam’s demands, and is mid-way through a heart-to-heart with Kat about recent events when Sam takes the mic and announces that Phil slept with Emma.
Mic drop.
A stunned Kat is left reeling, and a furious Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) orders Sam out of his house.
As news of Phil’s infidelity spreads like wildfire, a devastated Kat decides to drink herself into oblivion.
Will Kat believe Sam – and if so, could this be the end of her marriage?
