Emmerdale, Coronation Street and EastEnders fans are in for a treat this Christmas as the soaps are pulling out the stops to deliver explosive festive episodes.

Over on The Dales, there’s a new baby’s arrival to possible danger for some. Meanwhile, over on the cobbles, there’s a bittersweet exit for one character after 20 years and an emotional return for another. Elsewhere, in Albert Square, six female characters find themselves embroiled in a shocking death twist as one male character, maybe two, will be killed off.

However, some viewers have been left disappointed as some of the soaps have faced a huge change to their show’s usual schedule this Christmas Day. Here, we take a look at what time the soaps are on this Christmas and what viewers can expect…

What time is Emmerdale on Christmas Day? What happens?

Emmerdale is airing a short episode this year despite it being Christmas Day. It’s only on for 30 minutes which is a shake-up to the normal schedule as it usually airs for an hour on this day.

It seems there’s a mixture of dark scenes and joyful moments as Christmas hits the village. Mackenzie is still missing after his kidnap horror, while over at Butlers there’s a charged moment for Tracy and Caleb amid their secret affair.

There’s also tension between Marlon and Gus, but the festivities are soon back on track. Belle’s attempts to propose to Tom are scuppered yet again.

Peter has a gift for Carla, while Bernie makes an appearance following her recent exit. There’s also a shock courtesy of Paul and Billy, while Ed is left feeling guilty as his lies come back to haunt him. The Platts, the Websters and other show favourites also feature in the joyful episode.

What time is EastEnders on Christmas Day? What happens?

This year, EastEnders is on at the much later time of 9:45pm this year, as a huge twist unfolds. The episode is on for an hour, which is five minutes longer than last year – while there is normally either two 30-minute episodes or an hour-long visit on this day.

The post-watershed episode will be an hour of drama no doubt, given the events confirmed to be taking place. Of course we all know there is going to be a shocking death, with it hinted that a showdown occurs.

It’s also thought to be the day that Sharon Watts and Keanu Taylor tie the knot, as pictures on location from filming showed cast filming the scenes. But will the wedding go ahead given two huge bombshells could soon drop?

There will no doubt be some usual festive scenes too, while there has to be something big given at some point someone dies. Spoilers on the EastEnders website for the big episode read: “Christmas fever is in full swing in Walford. Sharon and Keanu prepare to say, ‘I do.’ The Mitchell family lunch is interrupted by an unexpected visitor.

“Jay receives an unexpected Christmas present. And in a flash, Denise, Kathy, Linda, Sharon, Stacey and Suki’s lives are permanently changed forever as a Walford male meets his fate in The Vic.”
