What happened to Albie Watts in EastEnders?

Recent scenes of the BBC One soap have shown Albie Watts being kidnapped as part of a scheme concocted by a devious Karen Taylor (played by Lorraine Stanley) and her son Keanu (Danny Walters).

Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) was left a shell of herself when her young son went missing and she was asked to drop off a huge amount of money in exchange for his safe return home.

Thankfully, Albie’s fake kidnapping ordeal came to an end and it was enough for Sharon to decide to remain in Walford despite her prior plans to move to Abu Dhabi.

In a shocking twist, both her and Keanu agreed to give their relationship another chance and their engagement was back on.

But due to his disappearance, Albie was brought to hospital for some check ups as Sharon was determined to make sure her son was healthy.

On Wednesday, November 15, 2023, Sharon received news from the doctor who was keen to share Albie’s blood test results with her.

Sharon rushed to the hospital alone as Keanu was running late and, although the consultant reassured her, he also told her that Albie had been diagnosed with a genetic condition known as AADT.

According to the medical professional, Albie could only have this disorder if both of his parents were carriers, which prompted Sharon and Keanu to get tested.

In a shocking twist, this led to another bombshell viewers had anticipated for a while.

Who is Albie Watts’ real father in EastEnders?

Following their tests, Sharon was revealed to be a carrier of the gene while Keanu was told he wasn’t.

Due to him missing the earlier part of Sharon’s conversation with the consultant, Keanu had no clue this meant he wasn’t Albie’s father.

Sharon made an excuse to speak to the professional alone, insisting the test results must be wrong but there was no way around it.

The consultant assured her of the accuracy of the results and questioned if she had been involved with anybody other than Keanu at the time of Albie’s conception.

In a surprise twist, the camera panned over to Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) who was standing outside the consulting room with Albie and Keanu, thus confirming he was the tot’s father all along.

Speaking about what’s ahead for her on-screen alter ego, Letitia Dean said that “the stakes are high” as she withholds the truth.

“She doesn’t know what to do – she’s absolutely floored!”

“Sharon and Keanu have only just rekindled their engagement after months of an off and on relationship, and she knows full well that this news will blow that apart!”

“On the other hand, there is such a mutual respect between Sharon and Phil, and deep down I don’t think she could or would want to keep this news from him, but he also doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to parenting so she’s worried about the influence he could have on Albie”, she added.

“The stakes are so high as she could stand to lose Keanu if she admits the truth.”

Sharon could turn to her half-brother Zack Hudson (James Farrar) for support but will she continue to keep Albie’s parentage a secret?

What happened between Sharon Watts and Phil Mitchell in EastEnders?

While this remains to be seen, the paternity twist was a shock for many fans of the London-based program as Albie’s true parentage was a huge cause for concern during Sharon’s pregnancy.

As soap fans will remember, Sharon and Phil were married in 2014 and she embarked on a steamy affair with Keanu.

Things became even more complicated when Keanu became romantically involved with Phil’s daughter Louise – and fathered her daughter Peggy Jr.

The love square reached explosive levels when Sharon found out she was pregnant, clueless as to who the father could really be.

But when she worked out the date of conception, Sharon figured out Keanu must be the father of her unborn child and Phil, who had been away to visit his brother Grant in Spain, reached the same conclusion by doing the same maths.

Phil violently ended his marriage to Sharon there and then and she gave birth to baby Albie on February 14, 2020, with Kathy Beale’s help.

Both Sharon and Phil have shared a long-standing chemistry over the years, despite her canoodling with his brother Grant in the past.

Last year, Phil and Sharon even kissed, despite him being in a relationship with Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace).

Sharon also tried to crash both Phil and Kat’s wedding in September, 2022, before eventually rekindling her romance with Keanu.

Despite being married to Kat, cracks have begun to appear in Phil’s love for her as he cheated on the fiery Slater with Emma Harding (Patsy Kensit).

And while Kat could grow more worried for the fate of her former husband Alfie Moon (Shane Richie), who is battling prostate cancer, Phil and Sharon may be brought even closer together after finding out Albie was never Keanu’s son.

How will it play out?

EastEnders airs from Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
