EastEnders’ Danny Dyer confirms return to iconic role as he admits ‘I’m going back’
Ex-EastEnders star Danny Dyer has been in the spotlight for more than two decades and has now confirmed his return to one of his most iconic roles as he admitted "the secret's out"
Danny Dyer has confirmed he is reprising his role as Tommy Johnson in The Football Factory.
The actor, 46, is perhaps best known for his portrayal as Mick Carter on EastEnders. But loyal fans will know his career kickstarted decades before that.
The 2004 sports drama film was directed by Nick Love, who is returning to helm its sequel along with other members of the original cast. Danny made the announcement in a video shared online, saying: “The secret’s out.
“I’m going back to work with The Football Factory director Nick Love and I cannot f*****g wait. We are going to be bang on the marching powder. That’s the name of the film by the way. It starts on January 15.”
Teasing what fans can expect, he added: “There’s going to be more crime, more drugs, there’s going to be some serious ultra violence. And you’re going to love it.”
He signed off the video by wishing fans a “merry f*****g Christmas.” The Football Factor follows two different groups of English football supporters, the Headhunters, who support Chelsea, and the Bushwhackers, who support Millwall.
The soccer fanatics regularly indulge in violence and drugs, but when a fight with their rival team gets out of control, they decide to change their lifestyle. In November, a source told The Sun: “The hope is they can turn it around quickly enough so it comes out in 2024 – in time for the 20th anniversary.
The insider continued: “The script for Marching Powder will reveal what happened to the rival factions of hooligans after the end of the last film. It’s a real passion project for Danny who can’t wait to get his teeth back into the role.”
The source revealed Tamer Hassan – who played Millwall leader Fred – is also returning for the sequel. Danny’s career announcement comes one year after he left EastEnders. In dramatic scenes on Christmas Day in 2022, Mick “died” trying to save Linda and Janine, who’s car plunged off a cliff and into the sea. But as Mick’s body was never discovered, fans still hold out hope that he is alive.
