In tonight’s episode her funeral played out as the Mitchells gathered to pay their respects.

As the family prepared for the funeral, it was left to Sam to get them all together and make sure they made it in one piece.

But as Phil questioned whether Sam had booked cars for them, she hit back: “How else are we going to get there Phil? On the buses?”

The reference left fans smiling with it obviously being a touching tribute to late actress Anna.

Apart from her role in EastEnders, she was best known for playing Olive Rudge in smash hit sitcom On the Buses between 1969 and 1973.

Fans were delighted at the touching moment.

One wrote: “That “on the buses” dialogue was a nice touch, given that the late, great Anna Karen (Aunt Sal), played Olive in the sitcom “On The Buses”.”

A second said: “On the buses ahhh cute wee tribute to Aunt Sal – Anna Karen.”

Another added: “An iconic send off for an iconic character. Goodnight Aunt Sal.”

The soap paid tribute to Anna in a statement at the time of her death.

It read: “We are deeply saddened to hear that Anna Karen has passed away.

“Anna created a sharp, quick witted and extremely popular character in Aunt Sal that the audience will never forget, just as those who worked with her at EastEnders will never forget her warmth, kindness fun and good humour.

“Our love and thoughts are with Anna’s family and friends.”
