Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) had romantic plans for her evening with Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman) in EastEnders, but these were suddenly derailed by a call from the hospital.
With Reiss having discovered that wife Debbie had contracted an infection, he headed off to the hospital, leaving Sonia to clear up the rose petals she had scattered on the staircase.
It was clear that Sonia had mixed feelings over the situation, and soon called Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) round for a chat.
Kathy was sympathetic to Sonia’s situation, already aware that she had wanted to take her trigger shot that evening so that the IVF clinic could start retrieving her eggs 36 hours later.
While Sonia made it clear that she knew Debbie hadn’t deliberately ruined her plans, Kathy asked if Reiss often rushed off to be with Debbie during their romantic evenings.
With Sonia’s lack of response, Kathy tentatively suggested that maybe it would be for the best if she did ‘slip away’ and Sonia admitted that she had considered that on more than one occasion.
Kathy was quick to comfort Sonia as she revealed that she’d probably be relieved if Debbie did die, and explained that it felt like she was always there, haunting them.
However, she lamented that if she did die then it would probably put an end to the IVF treatment, given how devastated Reiss would be.
As Sonia began to feel guilty for what she was saying, pointing out that a woman’s life was on the line, Kathy assured her that her feelings were justified, and she was allowed to be upset.
When Reiss arrived home sooner than expected, Sonia and Kathy both assumed the worst and apologised for his loss.
However, Reiss was quick to correct them, clearly leaving them with mixed emotions.
As Kathy made herself scarce, Reiss explained that Debbie had contracted pneumonia, which was really dangerous given her condition.
Upset, Reiss expressed how sorry he was for ruining their night, but Sonia assured him that they could wait to do the IVF trigger shot a few more days.
He explained that they had been doing tests and he had been sat alone in the corridor, but he couldn’t handle it and decided to come home.
Wanting to support him, Sonia offered to accompany him to the hospital this time, so that he didn’t have to be on his own, and he was quick to accept.
Will Debbie pull through, or will Reiss be left heartbroken?
