BBC EastEnders winter plots ‘sealed’ — fire twist, Christmas death and shock return

As BBC One's EastEnders gears up for its explosive Christmas murder whodunnit, there are plenty of storylines and theories to keep fans entertained this winter

EastEnders is known for its explosive Christmas storylines with past plots including the chilling Branning sisters’ Queen Vic rooftop fall and Mick Carter’s dramatic exit, where he disappeared at sea last year.

And as the BBC One soap gears up for its explosive Christmas murder whodunnit, there are plenty of storylines and theories to keep fans entertained this winter. From the upcoming reported deadly café fire, theories surrounding the dead body this Christmas to Dean Wicks’ shock “return” to the hit soap, here we take a look at what Christmas could look like in Albert Square this year…

Fire twist

It was reported recently that iconic Albert Square venue Kathy’s café will be destroyed by a deadly blaze. Reports claim characters could be left in serious danger as a fire spreads through the building in dramatic scenes. No details have been confirmed by the BBC soap about the shocking storyline or what happens.

What has been teased is that some fan favourites could be left fighting for their lives, with huge repercussions in the fallout. It’s also been teased that questions will be raised as to what or who causes the fire, with it tipped to be deliberate. And in new spoilers for next week, the BBC One soap has appeared to hint at the fire and a potential cause.

In upcoming scenes next week, Bernadette ‘Bernie’ Taylor struggles when the fuse box blows in the café and Kathy Beale can’t afford to pay a professional to sort it out. Could this lead to the fire? Viewers have been fearing for a number of characters since the twist was reported, especially with Karen Taylor actress Lorraine Stanley soon leaving the show.

Christmas death

Earlier this year, EastEnders released a first look at the 2023 Christmas episode in a flashforward scene in a BBC One soap first where Denise (Diane Parish), Kathy (Gillian Taylforth), Linda (Kellie Bright), Sharon (Letitia Dean), Stacey and Suki (Balvinder Sopal) were faced with a dead body.

Earlier this year, EastEnders released a first look at the 2023 Christmas episode in a flashforward scene

In the moments that unfolded at the Queen Vic, the group of women all stood round in shock in a festive-looking pub and looked down at a man, wearing amber cufflinks, lying dead on the floor. Not much was said between the group, but Stacey was covered in blood, Denise was holding a smashed bottle of Champagne and Sharon wore a bloodied wedding dress as she leant over the body.

Ever since the scenes aired, eagle-eyed soap fans have been looking for clues as to who the dead body could be with the likes of Keanu Taylor, Phil Mitchell, Dean Wicks, Nish Panesar, Ravi Gulati, Theo Hawthorne and Dean Wicks just a few of the names tipped to be the victim this Christmas.

Shock return

It was revealed this weekend that Dean is returning to the BBC soap, after actor Matt Di Angelo’s Walford comeback was accidentally leaked by a co-star in a backstage video. While EastEnders are yet to confirm the news, fans spotted Matt, 36, in the background of a filming video posted on TikTok. Prior to this, fans had long speculated Linda’s rapist and former brother-in-law Dean would be back for the Christmas whodunnit.
